towing 2 boats

Forums:

Hi, We are thinking of buying a mirror for cruising with the kids and a laser for racing. Any ideas how to transport both at the same time. My roof bars are too short to carry a mirror on the roof of the car. . .

When I sailed at Hawley Lake one of our members used to transport his Laser on top of an estate car. The hull weghs about 60 kg, not much more than a Mirror. Alternatively use a double stacking trailer. I built one out of a flat bed plant trailer to carry a Mirror and Skipper 12. It wasn't pretty. There's a picture on page 3 of my solent cruising guide.

Getting the Mirror down on my own was exciting.

Alternatively buy a real one;

Welcome to the forum!

Faced with the same problem, I clamped boards onto the roof bars, using steel stirrups cloned from an old bicycle transport rack. Originally I'd intended to improve the design but temporary fixes always last longest ;-{). The following three pictures show how it works:
Loading, 2013 :
loading for 2013 JollenFlottille
On the roof ready to go back home JollenFlottille 2011,
ready to go home, 2011 JollenFlottille
First time on the Scénic, 2010,
ready to go, 2010 JollenFlottille

The classic proof was in the original Mirror Dinghy Brochure:
ready to go, 2010 JollenFlottille

If you are going to have the laser too, then a solution as used by Richard K. Larson in the USA is of course logical:
Tweedledum and flying scot

And last but not least, if your car can tow a heavier combination then the double-decker trailer is the optimum solution, as Cliff pointed out.

I wish you success in finding a boat and a solution!

Thanks for the help!
