New build of an old kit

So, I'm planning on building up an old kit (mid 70s) that I picked up. What's the current thinking on sealing/sheathing with glass etc? I was going to coat all the wood with an epoxy barrier before starting the build, and then glass the bottom of the hull for a bit of added abrasion resistance, everything else would just be paint or varnished.
Presumably the spars are just a sand/varnish job?
