Hi Folks,
Wondering if people could share details / pictures of how their jib and forestay attaches to the bow of the boat.
Mine has a single vertical saddle at the front, the forestay attaches to it via a shackle which seems ok to me.
The previous owner has the tack of the jib attached via rope to a pulley and then a cleat near the base of the mast which to me is part of the spinnaker ( don't have one ) setup.
I was thinking a small bit a rope with a couple of bowlines would do for the job on the same saddle as the forestay and just not sure what size or breaking strain rope to use is this setup idea is correct. 3mm 240kg ?

jib and forestay
On my Mirror there is a D ring (don't know if that is the correct terminology) screwed in to the bow. The forestay is wire with a loop at the end and a narrow rope attached to the wire loop. I then thread the rope through the D ring and tighten it till it is good and snug. I think it should be tighten so that that the shrouds move not more than a quarter of an inch.
There are special connectors on the front of the jib that attach to the forestay and at the top of the jib there is a line which goes through a pulley at the top of the mast and down to a cleat at the bottom of the mast. This is pulled so that the front of the jib is good and snug. If you have any questions let me know and I will try to answer them.
Sorry, I can not provide a photo for a couple of months yet.
Pete

thanks pete, sounds similar
thanks pete, sounds similar to mine, just trying to work out how people attach the tack of the jib to that same point as the forestay.

You reminded me that I forgot
You reminded me that I forgot to mention that the tack of the jib (I forgot the term also) is anchored to a smaller flatter D type ring just below the one to which the forestay is attached. At the base of the tack I have a small line with a couple of loops, which allows me to set the height of the jib. It is held in place with half of a clothes pin. My system is not unique. All the people in the club to which I belong (OMDA) do it the same way.

I think that TAKU can answer your question admirably
I don't know whether this works ... if not, check out the "Mirror Dinghy" group on FaceBook
and
My compliments to Taku ... my bits of strings and things are far more messy!
Cheers,
