Mirror sailing in West Suffolk

Hi,

We are looking to rejuvenate our Mirror fleet at the St Edmundsbury Sailing & Canoeing Association, based at Lackford Lake, 5 miles NW of Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. We currently have four Mirrors sailing.

SESCA is a small, family orientated club which runs on-water events from the last weekend in March until early November. The Club organises dinghy racing on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays and Thursday evenings throughout the summer. The Club also runs RYA sailing courses and coaching sessions for members.

Visitors and new members welcome. Family membership £72 pa. Club boat available for hire to members.

You bring back many fond memories. In the early 1950s I was one of the over paid, over dressed, over sexed and over here people. I was in the United States Air Force stationed at RAF Station Shepherds Grove which was adjacent to the town of Stanton. Stanton I believe is due East of your sailing club. I can't estimate how far, but it was east north east of Bury St. Edmunds. I spent quite a bit of time in Bury (as we Yanks used to call it) especially seeing good movies in the Odeon. Is that movie theatre still there?
I know all this has nothing to do with sailing or Mirror Dinghies. But I am a Mirror Dinghy sailor today.
Pete

Hi Pete,

Glad to hear that you have fond memories of your time in Suffolk. RAF Honington were involved with the formation of the Club in 1981. We have been trying to get RAF Mildenhall and Lakenheath involved recently but no joy, so far. The old Odeon Theatre was demolished in 1983. http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/22888 . The Abbeygate Cinema, in Hatter Street, is still going strong.
Hope you are enjoying your Mirror. My parents had Mirror #66, on which I learnt to sail.

Regards
Mike

RAF Mildenhall and Lakenheath two names very familiar to me from my Suffolk days. Too bad about the Odeon Theatre. Keep after Mildenhall and Lakenheath perhaps you can entice them still to add Mirror sailing to their modes of transportation.
